Contenders without a supported valuation

Mostly bootstrapped companies with no priced round. We do not impute valuations from revenue multiples, so their progress toward $1B is unknown.

Tracked but not in the race

Ultra-Lean companies employ staff; Watchlist companies lack sufficient evidence. They are useful reference points, not candidates.

  • Base44ULTRA-LEANNo. Base44 was solo-founded and bootstrapped, but it had roughly 6–8 employees when Wix bought it (sources disagree on the exact number), so it was an ultra-lean company rather than a zero-employee one. It is now part of Wix.
  • MedviWATCHLISTNo. Medvi has at least one employee besides the founder, uses contractors, and relies on human-staffed partner networks for clinical care, pharmacy, fulfilment and compliance. It is a lean marketing and checkout storefront, not an AI-run zero-employee company.
  • MidjourneyULTRA-LEANNo. Midjourney is a self-funded company with dozens of employees (about 40 reported in 2023 and 60 per Forbes in April 2026), so it is an ultra-lean benchmark, not a zero-employee company.
  • PostizWATCHLISTUndetermined. Postiz has strong Stripe-verified MRR and began as a solo-founder business, but its hiring page shows a filled full-time role of unknown type, so we cannot yet say whether it has employees.
  • ShipFastWATCHLISTStructurally yes: by its founder's own account it is a one-person product with no employees. But its revenue over the last 30 days has fallen below our materiality threshold, so it is tracked on the Watchlist rather than classified ZE-Strict.
  • Swan AIWATCHLISTPossibly. Swan positions itself as a company with three founders and no employees, but April 2026 reporting describes four people, and revenue is disclosed only as 'seven figures'.
  • TypingMindULTRA-LEANNo. The founder has disclosed a full-time employee, part-time developers and later hires, so TypingMind is a small, lean team rather than a zero-employee company.

How the race works

  • Only ZE-Strict and ZE-Operational companies are ranked.
  • Rank uses the latest valuation or acquisition price graded A–C; the grade is always shown.
  • A verified winner needs both the valuation and the zero-employee position graded A or B.
  • Progress = latest supported valuation ÷ $1B. Bootstrapped companies stay unranked rather than estimated.

Historical changes

  1. 18 Oct 2026Downloads now withhold observations, timeline events and headline values that rest on a source whose terms forbid redistribution (TrustMRR). They stay on the site with attribution, labelled on each dossier. Export schema 1.1 adds withheld and withheldFacts.
  2. 16 Oct 2026Initial public dataset (v0.1.0): 10 published dossiers and 6 candidates in the research queue. Evidence grades A–D are attached per metric; scoring model ZES-0.1.
  3. 16 Oct 2026Published the classification rules (ZE-Strict, ZE-Operational, Ultra-Lean, Watchlist), the materiality threshold, and the verified definition of a $1B zero-employee company.
  4. 16 Oct 2026Headline rules: monthly revenue is kept separate from MRR; cumulative totals and projections are never used as revenue; derived values may not combine periods more than 12 months apart.
  5. 16 Oct 2026Polsia enters the Race to $1B at rank 1 on a founder-stated $250M valuation (grade C). SEC Form D filings (grade A) show funding that differs from press reports. Dossier
