Photo AI

Is Photo AI a zero-employee company? Probably yes. By the founder's own consistent account it is a one-person business with no employees and heavy automation, but nothing independent verifies that.

Web service where users upload selfies to train a personal AI model and then generate photos (and, since 2026, videos) of themselves. Built and run by Pieter Levels (@levelsio).

How each function is executed

Rated only where a source describes the function. Unknown is not low.

  • EngineeringMedium

Founder codes alone. Since about mid-2025 he says he codes 'almost solely on my VPS with Claude Code', which 'just live edits on my production server'. A human still directs the work.[10],[14]

  • ProductUnknown

No source describes how this function is executed.

  • MarketingLow

Done by the founder ('developer, designer, marketing (use ChatGPT to help with those)'), largely through his X account and press such as the Lex Fridman podcast.[3],[5]

  • SalesHigh

The founder lists 'moderation, sales' among tasks his scheduled scripts perform. Checkout is via Stripe. No sales staff are mentioned.[3]

  • SupportHigh

Self-service customer dashboard with self-refund, the Stripe Billing Portal for plan changes and cancellations, and self-service FAQs. No support contact is listed on the homepage.[3],[6]

  • FinanceUnknown

No source describes how this function is executed.

  • LegalUnknown

No source describes how this function is executed.

  • OperationsHigh

Scheduled 'worker robot scripts that use ChatGPT API' handle moderation and other work 'humans would do normally'. Google Vision checks every photo before it is shown to the user. AI models are hosted by FAL.[3],[8],[9]

Operating model

How the company operates

Photo AI is one of several products Levels runs alone (others include Interior AI, Nomads.com and Remote OK). He describes a setup aiming for '100% automation': scheduled scripts on the ChatGPT API for moderation and other recurring tasks, a self-service dashboard with self-refunds, the Stripe Billing Portal, and a Featurebase bug/feedback board.[3]

The codebase is a single large PHP file: about 14,000 lines of raw PHP with inline HTML/CSS/JS and jQuery in Jul 2023, and a 40,870-line index.php in Mar 2026. In 2024 he said the stack was 'PHP and jQuery, yes, and SQLite'.[4],[1],[8]

AI inference is outsourced to API providers. In Aug 2024 he praised Replicate. In May 2025 he wrote that 'FAL is responsible for hosting ALL the AI models I use for my site Photo AI'.[8],[9]

Levels' project list (updated 3 Oct 2026) classes Photo AI as one of 9 'Success' projects, with status 'Active'. In Sep 2026 he wrote that business revenue across all his products was 'very stable at about $200K-$250K/mo', without a Photo AI breakdown.[13],[2]

The photoai.com homepage counter shows '30,941,682 photos generated' (undated; read 2026-10-16).[6]

Founder responsibilities

  • Sole developer, designer and marketer; uses ChatGPT to help with design and marketing (Nov 2024).[3]
  • Writes and ships code himself, since about mid-2025 mostly through Claude Code running on his production VPS.[10]
  • At launch he fulfilled early orders by hand: 'the first few hundred, I just literally took their photos, trained them' (Lex Fridman Podcast, 2024).[8]

What we could not verify

  • No Stripe-verified or other third-party revenue source was found. All Photo AI revenue figures are the founder's own (grade C), and TrustMRR has no listing for Photo AI.
  • The founder's figures are 'monthly revenue' that includes discounted annual plans, not MRR. Recurring revenue is not disclosed.
  • Revenue appears to have declined from ~$150K/mo (Oct 2024) and the $161K/m one-day peak (Sep 2024) to $105K/mo (Mar 2026). No explanation was found.
  • Current contractor use is unknown. The only reference to a hired AI developer is a secondary quote seen in a search snippet, with no date.
  • No legal entity or country of incorporation for Photo AI was found.
  • Tooling may have changed: Aug 2026 post titles mention deleting Claude and possibly switching to xAI. The Claude Code stack entry reflects Jun 2026.
  • Per-product revenue after Mar 2026 was not found. The Sep 2026 figure ($200K-$250K/mo) covers all of his businesses.
