What is a zero-employee startup?
Definition
A zero-employee startup is a founder-operated company designed to perform recurring business execution through software, automation and AI agents rather than traditional employees, while humans retain strategy, accountability and high-risk decisions.
There is no external standard for the term. We found no regulator, standards body or established research source that defines “zero-employee company”, so this site defines it and publishes the rules it applies. The test is not whether a company has hired yet. It is whether its operating model is designed so recurring execution does not need employees.
01The four conditions
- 01
Founder-operated
One or a few founders work in the business and own its direction. Passive owners do not count as operators.
- 02
Designed, not merely early
Having no employees yet is normal for new startups. A zero-employee startup is built so recurring work does not require them.[1]
- 03
Recurring execution by software and agents
The decisive question is who executes recurring work (support, billing, deploys, content, reporting): software, automation and AI agents rather than staff.
- 04
Humans keep strategy, accountability and risk
Founders keep direction, legal accountability and high-risk or irreversible decisions. Corporate law itself requires a human link.[2]
On the second condition: Carta reports that solo founders on its platform hire their first employee after a median of 399 days.[1] Absence of employees is common early on. Designing for it is the distinguishing feature.
02Strict vs operational
Two classes qualify as zero-employee. Two more are tracked for reference.
Founders only. No employees and no recurring human workforce.
No employees. Limited specialists may exist; software and AI do most recurring execution.
A small human team with exceptional AI and software leverage. Not zero-employee; reference class.
An interesting candidate with insufficient evidence, or one that does not currently qualify. Not zero-employee; reference class.
03How it differs from related terms
| Term | What it usually means | How a zero-employee startup differs |
|---|---|---|
| Solopreneur | A person building and running a business alone, without employees, sometimes outsourcing to freelancers.[3] | Describes self-employment, where the founder's own labour is often the product. A zero-employee startup may have several founders and is designed so recurring execution does not depend on founder labour. |
| One-person company | Either a legal form defined by a single owner, such as India's One Person Company or China's single-shareholder LLC,[4],[5] or informally a company run by one person. | The legal form concerns ownership, not workforce: a legal one-person company can employ many people. Zero-employee describes how work is executed. |
| Autonomous company | No established definition. The recognised term is the “decentralized autonomous organization”, where autonomous means governed by blockchain code.[6] | A zero-employee startup keeps human governance and accountability. Software runs the execution; founders still decide. |
| AI-native startup | A company built around AI from the outset, as opposed to an incumbent adding AI. Used widely without a formal definition.[7] | Says nothing about headcount: AI-native companies can be large. Zero-employee is a property of the operating model, not the product. |
| Zero-person company | An emerging research term for a business whose operational work is done by AI agents. Both sources we found keep humans involved, as a supervisory board or a legal link.[8],[2] | A zero-employee startup has founders by definition. We avoid implying that no humans are involved. |
| One-person unicorn | Shorthand for a hypothetical company with one person and a valuation of $1B or more, popularised by Sam Altman and Dario Amodei.[9],[10] | A milestone, not an operating model. We track it in the Race to $1B. |
04Why the category is emerging now
Predictions from AI company leaders
OpenAI's Sam Altman described a betting pool among tech CEOs on “the first year that there is a one-person billion-dollar company”. The clip was posted on 31 January 2024; its venue and date are not fully verified.[9] In May 2025 Anthropic's Dario Amodei said a billion-dollar company with one human employee could appear as soon as 2026. He later put the chance at “70 to 80 percent”.[10] These are predictions, not evidence.
Founder and team data
Carta reports that the share of new startups with a solo founder rose from 23.7% in 2019 to 36.3% in the first half of 2025.[1] It also reports that the median seed-stage team is now four employees and that average Series D headcount fell 29% from its 2023 peak. Carta links this to AI on the basis of timing, not causal analysis.[11]
Y Combinator's Jared Friedman estimated that about a quarter of its Winter 2025 batch had codebases that were 95% AI-generated, a spoken estimate rather than a measurement.[12] CNBC, paraphrasing Garry Tan, reported companies reaching as much as $10 million in revenue with fewer than ten people.[13]
Headcount leverage is not new
Instagram had 13 employees when Facebook agreed to buy it for about $1 billion in 2012.[14],[15] WhatsApp had 55 when Facebook agreed to pay about $19 billion in 2014.[16],[17] Those companies had small teams because software distribution scales. The new claim is that AI agents extend that leverage to recurring operational work: support, marketing, finance and engineering itself. That claim is what this site sets out to test with evidence.
05What it is not
- “Zero employees means zero humans.”
- Founders remain, and so do occasional professionals such as accountants and lawyers. The constraint is on recurring employed execution.
- “It is anti-hiring.”
- Zero employees is an optimisation constraint, not a dogma. Some work should stay human, and Ultra-Lean companies are tracked as a legitimate reference class.
- “Outsourcing counts.”
- Moving recurring work to partners or contractors removes employees from the payroll, not the human work. Such companies are not classified zero-employee unless software and AI do most recurring execution.
- “A claim is enough.”
- Most claims in this category are founder-reported. Every figure here carries an evidence grade, and unverified claims are labelled as such.
06Examples from the dataset
- Photo AIZE-OPERATIONAL
Probably yes. By the founder's own consistent account it is a one-person business with no employees and heavy automation, but nothing independent verifies that.
- PolsiaZE-OPERATIONAL
By the founder's own grade-C statements, yes in the operational sense: one founder, no employees, AI agents, outside legal advisors and partner firms. No independent source has verified the headcount, and the headline 'run rate' mixes different kinds of revenue.
- SEObot (SEO Bot AI)ZE-OPERATIONAL
Plausibly yes: a two-founder AI product with no disclosed employees and Stripe-verified lifetime revenue. However, current Stripe-verified MRR is far below the founder's 2025 claim of ~$120K, and current staffing is unconfirmed.

Solo founders hired their first employee after a median of 399 days, versus 480 days for multi-founder companies.

CBloomberg Tax.'Zero-Person' Companies Operated by AI Would Create VAT Tensions
A Bloomberg Tax commentary describes a 'zero-person company' as one where autonomous agents carry out all operational work without direct supervision. It argues that such a company cannot exist entirely without people, because corporate law requires a human link (such as directors or beneficial owners) somewhere in the structure. It also says these companies raise unresolved VAT place-of-establishment questions.

KPMG Netherlands and the University of Amsterdam ran a 'zero-person company' experiment. AI agents chose to launch a webshop for personalized AI art, with a human supervisory board that monitored and coached them. The researchers found that agents placed in executive roles such as CFO tended to drift off and hallucinate, so they switched to many narrowly scoped 'disposable' agents working within defined processes.
