Autonomous MRR

Revenue that keeps arriving if the founder looks away. The portfolio-level measure of a zero-employee operating model.
Updated 16 Oct 2026

Definition

Autonomous MRR is monthly recurring revenue generated by products that require less than a defined threshold of founder intervention, by default 2 hours per week of recurring operational work.

A proposed metric, not an industry standard. Always report the threshold with the value.

01Formula

Autonomous MRR

MRR from products that run below a defined founder-intervention threshold.

v0.1
Autonomous MRR = Σ MRRₚ for every product p where hₚ ≤ T
MRRₚ
Monthly recurring revenue of product p
hₚ
Founder hours per week on p's recurring operations (trailing 4-week average; excludes strategy)
T
Intervention threshold; v0.1 default 2 hours per week

The share of revenue that keeps arriving if the founder looks away. Track it as a share of total MRR.

  • — Sensitive to the threshold T; always report T alongside the value.
  • — Hours must be logged, not estimated from memory.

Illustrative autonomous MRR calculation
ProductMRRFounder ops h / wkBelow 2h?
Product A$15.2k1.5hYes: autonomous
Product B$8.1k2.5hNo
Product C$6.4k1hYes: autonomous
Product D$2.1k6hNo
Autonomous MRR
$21.6k
Share of total MRR
68%

Product B misses the threshold by half an hour a week. Automating one recurring workflow would move $8.1k into autonomous MRR, often a better use of an hour than chasing new revenue.

03How to raise it

  1. Find the products just above the threshold; they are the cheapest wins.
  2. List the recurring workflows that still need the founder in each, ranked by hours.
  3. Automate deterministic workflows with software first, then delegate judgement-light work to agents, with approval where risk warrants it.
  4. Re-measure with logged hours over four weeks before counting the product as autonomous.

04Relation to the Zero-Employee Score

The Zero-Employee Score measures one company's operating model, including founder intervention and recurring workflow automation. Autonomous MRR aggregates the same idea across a portfolio. Both rest on measured founder hours, which is the variable public companies almost never disclose.
